Rogan’s Books on Castle Lane, Bedford has been chosen as one of just three independent bookshops throughout the UK to host a unique day with best-selling author Philip Pullman CBE as part of this year’s Independent Bookshop Week (16th – 23rd June).
Mr Pullman will come to Bedford on Monday 18th June and his visit will include a trip down the River Great Ouse in Bedford’s very own ‘La Belle Sauvage’, a bespoke tour of the Panacea Museum and events and activities for families to take part in. The culmination of the day will be a reading from the Book of Dust and a book signing.
This is a huge achievement for Rogan’s Books and yet again puts Bedford on the map as a town of brilliant independent shops
Said Rachael Rogan: “Bedford is an ancient town, home to Roman villas, Saxon castles and a messianic religion with apocalyptic themes. Our pitch to the publishers was to combine one of the town’s most haunting locations – the incredible Panacea Museum – with the Pullman Dark Materials stories in a magical and unique way.”
After travelling down the River, Mr Pullman will receive a guided tour of the Panacea Museum, uncovering the extraordinary history of the Society, one of the most curious religious communities in England. Exhibits include ornate rooms ready for Archbishops who will never arrive, letters from exasperated princesses, and exquisitely regal robes for a messianic baby who was never born. All set in beautiful gardens in which the Panaceans expected to live immortally.
The event will begin at 4:30pm. Families will enter to find a marquee of Dark Materials-themed activities: Little Science Lab will recreate an alethiometer and the Circus of Illustration will help the children create their own daemons, whilst chocolatl drinks from Bears & Tales mixologists are served.
At 5:15pm Mr Pullman will read from The Book of Dust in the museum’s Box Room. Following a Q&A session there will be a book-signing in the marquee.
Tickets to the event will be available shortly, so watch this space!
They will include a choice of book, to be signed by Philip after the reading. Attendees will be able to choose from the hardback of The Book of Dust (Penguin Random House and David Fickling) or the hardback special edition of His Dark Materials (Everyman). Rogan’s Books will hold a ‘pop-up’ shop at the museum selling all of Philip’s titles.
