Helen Davies, Director of Woburn Country Foods Butchers based in Haynes, is a finalist in the National Women In Meat Awards, Food Service Category.
The competition is run by Meat Management Magazine to celebrate the work of women in the meat industry as they are still very much in the minority of staff numbers.
A panel of judges from the meat & butchery industry select 4 finalists in each category. Their votes will be combined with an online vote from customers and suppliers of each nominee, and a winner will be announced at a glittering ceremony in London on the 16th November.
Helen joined the family business in 2003 when they had 5 staff and an annual turnover of £250k. Helen has worked marketing the business to catering outlets, selling at farmers markets and launching their three butchers shops. They now employ 20 staff & supply over 100 restaurants, hotels, pubs and tourist attractions in Bedfordshire & surrounding areas and have a turnover of £2.75 million.
“It can be very challenging trying to keep all of our customers happy, managing the team and trying to source the best local produce,” said Helen. “The industry is dominated by men but, particularly in the last few years, there have been many more women joining the industry. In my work I am most proud of promoting the great quality meats produced by our Bedfordshire farmers and that we get to put money straight back into our local community. Winning the Women in Meat Award would be a real boost for our whole team & recognition for all their hard work & commitment.”
