This year, the Bedford Clanger has been working closely with students from St Thomas More school to produce a special Teen Takeover issue of our publication.
Compiled by Daisy Smith, Georgina Morgillo, Cherith Jones and with cover artwork by Abi Barkas, the issue covers topics including politics, sport, mental health and social media. Printed in October, the on-going aim is to produce an annual edition compiled by 13 – 19 year olds. “When this opportunity came along, I grabbed it,” said Head of Sixth Form, Kirsten Bernard. “The project had just the right skills development opportunities that we seek within the Sixth Form at St Thomas More. Teen Takeover was a perfect project for epitomising what we try to instil in Sixth Formers – independence, seeking out opportunities, getting involved and thinking bigger than yourself. The girls have shown drive and enthusiasm throughout, from the initial idea generation to the finished article; an engaging multi genre read . It is always wonderful to see such positive involvement, community contributions and commitment in our teenagers within the school, well done to Daisy, Cherith, Georgina and Abi for their tireless hard work on this.”
Headteacher Alison Wilshaw said “We are extremely proud of our Sixth Formers for their work produced in the Teen Takeover. The finished product looks and reads well – testimony to the talent of these young ladies. It is brilliant! What is even more pleasing is the commitment and diligence that the Sixth Formers showed in the many hours they injected into this project, in between studies, hours after school and during free time. Many different areas have been covered, with writing styles that draw the reader in and covering topics of huge interest to theteen market. Who couldn’t be interested in the talent that is Tom Grennan – incidentally a former student at St Thomas More too. Teenagers often receive a bad press from the older generation, but here we see talented young ladies taking the ‘press’ into their own hands and showing the positivity and hard work that we recognise in our students.”
The Teen Takeover has been distributed to local secondary schools and colleges and is also available at various Bedford pick up points including the library, Coffee with Art, Vanilla Tree, The Quarry Theatre, Gallones Ice Cream Parlour and Slide Record Shop plus you can read it online below.
We hope to involve students from more schools next year and if you want to get involved please email email@example.com. Cherith said “Writing The Clanger was an amazing experience! Learning to write articles based on topics that are very relevant for our generation felt like a massive accomplishment. The whole process was exciting and enjoyable and has confirmed our love for writing.”
