This month’s Best of Bedford is brought to you by Liz Sutton the new landlady of one of Bedford’s best-loved pubs, the Wellington Arms. Having worked at the pub for the last 12 years, Liz now has her name above the door and she’d love to see you, so pop in for a pint. They have the best beers…
Name: Liz Sutton
Occupation: Landlady of the Welly
Born here or blow in? Grew up in a nearby village, Bedford was the only available bus route out.
Best thing about Bedford? I’m biased as I love my town. it’s a cliche but the lovely people I meet on a daily basis, all the good restaurants, pubs and esquires (though I am missing dancing in the Pad)
Best breakfast? Embankment for the views on a sunny morning and the Portuguese for a hungover fry up
The one place you’d recommend to visitors? Definitely the Panacea museum, it’s just fascinating, who would have thought that the garden of eden was on our doorstep. I’ve just finished reading the biography of Octavia, have a read and visit her home.
Ever read John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress? I am an avid reader but I must admit to getting distracted after the first few pages and never finished it.
Bedford’s best boozer? Apart from the Welly??! We have a great selection of pubs in Bedford, I enjoy the Ship garden, the three cups, brewhouse and the Devvy.
Best place to get a coffee or cuppa? I’m a coffee fiend and visit many of the towns coffee shops but my favourite at the moment is the Gallery, people watching out the window and maybe a cheeky sausage roll….
Best Bedfordian? All of the ones drinking in the Welly.
Ever eaten a Bedfordshire Clanger? gosh, no I haven’t. I’ll endeavour to try one before the month is done
Three words that sum up Bedford: Cheeky, Joyous, Surprising
