First sustainable market is launched in Bedford this weekend

The first sustainable market to be held in Bedford will launch this weekend, featuring food, homewares and toiletries from local suppliers.

The Sustainable Life Market will be held in St Paul’s Square and is being hosted by Gourmet Alternative. It is supported by Made in Bedford at Number 13, whose vegan cafe is opposite the market site.

Organiser Ivona Hodges said, “We are passionate about bringing together people, good food and products that are good for the environment.

“During lockdown we saw pollution reduce and the amount of waste go down. It is important now more than ever that we embrace this opportunity and bring more sustainable and ethical products to market.

“There are some amazing small businesses around doing just that.”

The market takes place on Sunday 25 October from 10am and 3pm with future events to follow.

Councillor Henry Vann, portfolio holder for town centres and planning, said, “It is great to be able to welcome the Gourmet Alternative Sustainable Life Market to Bedford town centre.

“A number of local independent businesses will be selling sustainable products at the market. As our leading markets grow in Bedford it is timely that we host a market that supports the shift towards sustainable solutions and environmental awareness, as an important part of the work we do as a council, including our commitment to make Bedford Borough free of single-use plastics.

“Therefore, we’re encouraging residents to support local trade and visit the Sustainable Life Market.

“If you do visit the Sustainable Life Market, you should remember to wear a face mask in crowded places, maintain social distancing from those outside your household and clean your hands as frequently as possible.”
